Cultural Heritage Group has created a six-week educational series on the Durham, North Carolina, Hayti Community. It follows several community-based forums and presentations which gleaned the needs to create an educational experience and treatment of the foundational and futuristic relevance of academically understanding the true dynamics of the Hayti Community Development as an initiative and historic movement. The educational series will be hosted by Duke University Center for Documentary Studies in the Spring of 2012.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
After successfully completing this course, you will be able to do the following:

- Define the social history of Durham’s Negro Experience and formulate questions about the Legacy of Black America.
– Use oral history interview techniques and strategic research to gather information about social history.
– Identify advantages for integrating primary source documents produced under this study into K-12 curriculum.
- Learn how to build a resource database.
- Learn how to conduct, shoot and edit interview segments

CREATIVE STRATEGY
To create a narrated simulation of W.E.B. DuBois letter, “The Upbuilding of Black Durham” as the thread which ties the film together and represents the uniqueness and historical significance of the Hayti community in Durham.

Title: Hayti Documentary Screening
Location: The Hayti Heritage Center
Description: There will be two (2) screenings of The Legacy of Hayti documentary October 18, 2010 at Hayti Heritage Center at 7:00 PM, and October 19, 2010 at Mount Vernon Baptist Church at 4:00 PM. Over 100 persons will be invited representing community activist, historians, working class, elected officials, filmmakers, senior citizens, church congregants, and the foundation/business sector to participate in three (3) focus groups led by humanities scholars and one of the filmmakers. A content analysis of the focus group discussion reports will be made to identify events and trends that had an impact on the economic, political and cultural legacy of Hayti and Durham. The film screening is free and open to the public.
